How You Can Participate In "Save the Cherubs"

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Awareness RibbonCDH Families - click here to learn how members of CHERUBS can participate in this national CDH Awareness campaign.   CDH survivors, siblings and grieving families are all welcome to join in.   We also encourage family members and friends to help as well!
  • Who can participate?
Any members of CHERUBS, including both survivors and families of non-survivors.   Siblings and other family members are welcome to be extras in the background of the photos.

  • I am not a member of CHERUBS.  How do I join?
You can sign up for free on our web site at http://www.cdhsupport.org

  • What do I have to do to participate?
For our members, we need more than models.  We also need your help in making this campaign successful as we cannot do it without you!    We need you to help us make the local media awareness of this campaign, request billboard space, advertising space - all using your photographs in your town!   Your cherub will be local celebrity and possibly a national celebrity as well!    There are 5 things we need in your participation:
  1. E-mail us at awareness@cdhsupport.org with the following:
    1. your name
    2. cherub's name
    3. date(s) of birth and death
    4. your phone number
    5. your e-mail address
    6. your town and state
    7. your available dates and times to model
    8. write 1 paragraph about your cherub  (ex:  "Mary was born in 1998 with CDH.  She spent 3 months at NYU and came home on oxygen.  She had to go on ECMO and her odds of survival for her severe case was only 25%.  It was a rough few years, not knowing if she'd survive or where life would take her, but she did it!   She is now in middle school and a straight A student who is on the debate team")
    9. let us know if your home is available as a photo shoot location.
  2. We also need your model release form signed and in our hands before we can schedule a photo shoot.  You can fax it or mail it in.
  3. Contact your local newspaper, TV stations and magazines to tell them about the shoot.  Don't worry - we'll make it easy for you!   Form letters can be found here.
  4. Arrive at your photo shoot on time and ready.  We will call / e-mail you with details on where to go and when, who your photographer is, what to wear, etc.
  5. Give local interviews (just be yourself and spread CDH awareness!)

  • Will it cost me anything to participate?
Not at all except for a few hours of your time and maybe a little gas to drive to a photo shoot location.

  • My other children (or friends, cousins, etc) want to be backgrounds models in the shoot.  Do they need release forms too?
Yes, everyone who is in the photo needs to sign a model release form.

  • Do I have to buy special clothes for the photo shoot?
No, models will wear every day clothes.   We ask that models do *not* wear white clothing so the wings will be more visable.  Wings will be provided either by the photographer or loaned out by CHERUBS.

  • Where will the photo shoot be?
We try to schedule all photo shoots with photographers local to our models.  Shoots can take place in their studio, at your home, at school, work, on the street, at a playground, at a zoo, etc.    Location must be agreed upon by all 3 parties (you, the photographer and CHERUBS).

  • How long will it take to schedule a photo shoot?
If we can easily find a photographer in your area, about 2 weeks.  It may take longer if it is harder to find a volunteer photographer.

  • I know a photographer who will take my cherub's photograph.   Can I use him or her?
Sure, if he / she will agree to do this shoot and sign the necessary paperwork to do so.

  • Will I get copies of the photographs after the shoot?
Yes, the photographer will send you no less than 10 photographs for your own personal use.    He / she may also sell prints to you if you both agree to do so.

  • Can I post these photos on-line?
Only for personal use (on your blog, etc).   However, you MUST give credit to the photographer and it would be nice if you gave the Save the Cherubs campaign credit as well.

  • Aren't these my photos to do anything that I want to with?
No, they are not.  Copyrights belong to the photographers and we must respect that.  CHERUBS has permission to use the photographs for this campaign.  As a model, or guardian of a model, you have the right use these photos for personal reasons only.   You cannot sell them, print them to distribute, use them in any other campaign, etc.

  • How do I get the local media to participate?
Call, e-mail, write - be persistant!   This campaign IS a big deal!   CDH Awareness is a newsworthy event!   If you sent your e-mails / letters and didn't hear back within a week - call them!

  • I want to see my child on a billboard!  How do I do that?
Contact your local billboard company (the phone number is usually listed at the bottom of billboards) and ask them to donate space!   Form letters can be found here.

Photographers -  photographers around the United States are needed to volunteer to participate in this campaign.

  • Who can volunteer to photograph for this campaign?
Any professional photographer without a criminal record who wishes to volunteer his / her time.  CHERUBS reserves the right to conduct a background check on any photographer to maintain the safety of our members.

  • What types of photos are you looking for?
Candid, photojournalism shots.  Bright colors, contrasts - photos that will turn heads on billboard, magazines, etc.   We are not looking for soft, Anne Geddess, fantasy type photos - as beautiful as they are, there are not consistent with this campaign.  All photos must be candid and not look posed - no models should be looking at the camera.

  • What types of poses and venues can we use?
Any as long as they are safe and models and guardians agree.

  • Will all photographers who volunteer be used?
If we have enough models in the locations of the photographers, yes.

  • Who owns the copyrights on these photos?
Photographers maintain all copyrights to their photographs.

  • Who supplies the wings for these photos?
If you have wings already that we can use, that will be wonderful.  If not, let us know and we can loan our members a pair to bring to the shoot.

  • Who will be present at the photo shoots?
The model(s), guardians and possibly local media, videographers or CHERUBS Representatives.

  • How much time will I have to volunteer?
Approximately 3 hours to fill out the release form and mail it in, participate in the photo shoot, edit photos and send them in.  That's it!

  • What will you do with the photographs?
They will be used in the "Save the Cherubs" marketing campaign through CHERUBS web sites, blogs, social networking sites and printed materials.  They may also be used in newsletter, magazines, billboards and other marketing venues.   CHERUBS will also use no more than 3 of any photos from a shoot on our Cafepress store to help raise money for this campaign.   You will always be given credit for your work.   We also request 1 signed autographed photograph to be auctioned off at our Angel Ball on August 21, 2010.    We will not use, reproduce or resell your photographs for any other reason than for this "Save the Cherubs" CDH Awareness campaign.

  • How will photographers receive recognition?
Photographers will be recognized for their participation and their work through the following:
  1. Listing on this site (CHERUBS is the world's largest CDH organization, in 38 countries - our sites receive over 10,000 hits each month)
  2. Your name will listed every time we use your photo on our sites, blogs and materials.
  3. Your name will be listed every time your photo is used in advertisements, magazines, billboards and other media.
  4. Your name and worked will be featured as an auction item at CHERUBS Angel Ball and on related sites and materials.

  • Can I use these photos in my portfolio?
Absolutely!

  • Can I use these photos for other campaigns?
No.  We must ask that you sign the release form giving us permission to use the photos and promising not to use the photos in any other campaigns for any other causes or charities or businesses.

Media
  • What is the mission of this campaign?
The mission of "Save the Cherubs" is to make Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia a phrase everyone knows how to save and everyone knows what it means.  By raising awareness, we hope to raise research funds to save these babies - Save the Cherubs.   Our campaign is a media blitz using photos of the kids dressed as cherubs (street clothes with wings) in photos doing real life things to emphasize that these kids are real… they exist, they could be on the playground playing with your kids. They could be the children of the people you shop beside or the baby your neighbor lost but no one knows because there is no awareness!

  • How will the media be involved in this campaign?
When a photo shoot is planned we will contact local media to cover the event.

  • Why should the media cover this campaign?
Because it is the first of it's kind.  It is the first marketing blitz for a cause that has harmed over half a million babies since 2000.  Because these children deserve to have a voice and research and awareness.
